The Policy Research Institute for Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (PRILIT) of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) recently has published a study on logistics in the ASEAN region.

In recent years, Japanese manufacturers and retailers have accelerated expansion into the ASEAN region, for the purpose of acquisition of global competitiveness and entry into the overseas expanding consumer market. With the inauguration of the ASEAN Economic Community, which is scheduled for 2015, an increase in investment in the ASEAN region and reconstruction of the supply chain due to the elimination of tariffs are expected.

In this situation, Japanese logistics companies may consider expanding into overseas market, especially into the ASEAN region, assessing issues of business and trends of competitors, shippers and so on.

This study aims to provide useful information to Japanese logistics companies when considering their inroads into the region, especially into Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, where they may need to build up the supply chain for manufacturers in the future.

In view of ongoing development in supply chain in the ASEAN region, PRILIT predicted the expanded cargo flow in the ASEAN region. In addition, it has sorted out countermeasures and bottlenecks in the business operations of Japanese logistics companies, based on the document searches and the interviews to the logistics companies, which are have now operating in the ASEAN region.

Based on the findings, PRILI provides various kinds of information that may contribute to the decision-making of Japanese logistics companies that attempt to expand into the ASEAN region in the future.
