Overall throughput of containerized shipments that major shipping companies moved among 12 Asian economies (including Japan) in April 2014 increased 7.3% from a year earlier to 1.254 million TEUs. Exports from Japan went down 1.4% to 151,000 TEUs, but imports to Japan improved 9.4% to 199,000 TEUs.

In the first four months (January-April), a total of 4.712 million TEUs were handled on the intra-Asia trade, which grew 4.6% year on year from 4.507 million TEUs. Containers from Japan hiked 1.5% to 594,000 TEUs, while those to Japan were more brisk, climbing 5.8% to 764,000 TEUs.
