Containerized exports from Japan to China suffered a double-digit decline in March 2014, falling 10.5% year on year to 1,067,604 tons, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). In contrast, imports from China to Japan enjoyed a notable improvement, soaring 18.9% to 2,052,227 tons.

On a value scale, outbound shipments went down 2% to \638.1 billion, the JMC said. Freight rates for container services from Yokohama to Shanghai have been fluctuating at rates of US$360 to 370 per TEU since they peaked in February 2013.

Meanwhile, inbound cargo was valued at \1.176 trillion, surging 22.4% from a year earlier. As for freight rates for services on the trade from China to Japan, the China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI) began rising in the second half of July 2013. The index went down slightly in November last year, but more recently, it has been again on an upward trend.
