Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has announced in his recent budget speech to parliament that the nation is prohibiting shipping lines to impose surcharges including Terminal Handling Charges (THCs) from January 1, 2014. The abolishment of THC has been longstanding demand from shippers in the country. The Sri Lankan Shippers' Council has criticized shipping lines claiming that the THC has boosted the cost of Sri Lanka's exports to the detriment of the Sri Lankan shippers' international competitiveness.
