Japan exported 885,878 tons of shipments to China in September 2013, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). From a year earlier, they went down 8.8% from 971,243 tons, and from a month earlier, down 9.3%. However, they were steady on a value basis, growing 1.7% year on year to \539.2 billion.

Freight rates for services from Japan to China remained on a downward trend after reaching a peak at the end of 2012.

Meanwhile, the JMC indicated in a report it unveiled last week that imports from China to Japan increase 4.6% from 1.786 million tons to 1.868 million tons in September. On a value scale, they surged 23.8% to \1.143 trillion.

Freight rates for inbound services from China to Japan were on the decline after peaking late last year, but in more recent months, the China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI) was on the rise.

In the first nine months of 2013, Japan exported a total of 9.19 million tons to China, going down 2.3 % year on year, and imported 17.131 million tons, up 0.4%.
