Trade ports in South Korea handled a total of 998.6 million tons of shipments in the first nine months (January-September) of 2013, declining 0.3% year on year, according to the nation’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF).
The MOF announced on Oct. 30, 2013 that containers increased 3.3% to 17.399 million TEUs, but their growth experienced a downturn as the U.S. and European economies did not recover as much as expected.
In breakdown, 10.355 TEUs were exported to and imported from South Korea, going up 1.4%, and 6.899 million TEUs were transshipped, up 8.9%.
By port, Busan, the busiest port in the country, processed 13.191 million TEUs, going up 3.1% and Kwangyang, 1.655 million TEUs, up 3.1%. Throughput improved more favorably at Inchon thanks to growth in container movement to and from China and Southeast Asia, which rose 8.3% to 1.576 million TEUs.
