Japan exported 976,502 tons of containerized shipments to China in August 2013, which decreased 4.9% from a year earlier, according to an announcement made by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) on Oct. 17.

Meanwhile, imports increased 1.2% to 1,846,959 tons.

Exports from Japan to China were valued at \607.8 billion, going up 9.2%, and imports, \1.105 trillion, up 19%.

Freight rates began to decline for both directions after reaching peaks at the end of 2012, but as for inbound services from China to Japan, the China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI) had been on an upward trend since the second half of July.

In the first eight months from January to August, exports from Japan to China went down 1.6% year on year to 8,304,555 tons, and imports, down 3.7% to 14,713,440 tons.
