The International Maritime Organization's Sub-Committee on Dangerous Goods, Solid Cargoes and Containers (DSC), at its 18th session, adopted a requirement to verify container weights, a proposed amendment to the SOLAS Convention for the ''mandatory verification of gross weight of containers'' developed at the request of shippers and several governments.
The amendment must then be approved at the next 93 IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) meeting slated for May 2014. Once approved at the MSC meeting, the proposed amendment will be effective in 2016.
