A total of 1.254 million TEUs of containerized shipments were carried among 12 Asian economies in May 2013, increasing 6% from a year earlier.
From Japan, 173,000 TEUs were exported, surging 15%, which was the first year-on-year improvement registered this year, and imports were as brisk, soaring 10.4% to 208,000 TEUs.
In the first five months of the year, the intra-Asia trade saw 5.95 million TEUs of containers traded, growing 3.5% from the corresponding months of 2012.
Exports from Japan nearly unchanged, going up a minute 0.7% to 803,000 TEUs, while imports also almost leveled off, climbing a mild 1.4% to 977,000 TEUs.
