Exports of containerized shipments from Japan to China increased 1% year on year from 1,102,210 tons to 1,113,616 tons in April 2013, according to a recent report on container movement between the two nations.

They came back from the previous month, when they fell 2.4%, but in terms of value, they declined 2% from a year earlier to \566.5 billion. Freight rates on the route have been on the decline since the beginning of the year.

Meanwhile, the Japan Maritime Center (JMC), which compiled the report, said that container imports from China to Japan rose 3.8% from 1,959,186 tons to 2,023,573 tons in April. They also made a comeback from March, when they suffered a double-digit decrease of 15%. They were brisk on a value basis as well, surging 15.5% to \1.0848 trillion.

In contrast, freight rates have been sluggish for services from China to Japan since January.

In the first four months, containers from Japan to China went down 2.6% year on year to 4,115,214 tons and from China to Japan, down 5.7% to 7,072,227 tons.
