The Port of Yokohama processed 1.61 million TEUs of containers in the first half (January–June), up 4.8% from the same six months of the previous year, marking the sixth consecutive year of growth, according to the city of Yokohama’s Port and Harbor Bureau. It was the first time in 16 years, or since 2010, that first-half throughput had exceeded the 1.6-million-TEU line.
Overall cargo volume amounted to 49.89 million tons, down 0.5%, of which containers accounted for 24.07 million tons, up 5.3%.
As for foreign-trade containers, exports came to 749,879 TEUs, up 1.3%, and imports, 676,700 TEUs, up 9.3%, for a total of 1.43 million TEUs, up 5%. Domestic containers totaled 181,259 TEUs, up 3.3%, setting a new first-half record.
Redeveloping wharves to accommodate ultra-large containerships, the port has increased the number of service that it handles, the port and harbor bureau said, adding that sales and marketing activities are made to attract more foreign-trade and domestic containers.
By major products, exports of completed automobiles soared 11.6% to 1.35 million tons and dyes and other chemicals, 2.2% to 980,000 tons, although auto parts and components shrank 7.9% to 2.12 million tons.
