26.10.19WCI Rises 3% in Week 42
The Drewry World Container Index (WCI) rose 3% from the previous week to $4,485 per FEU in Week 42, mainly due to an increase in rates on the Asia-Europe trade route. From a year earlier, the index was higher by 166%.
On the trans-Pacific trade route, rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles inched up 3% to $7,884 per FEU, but those from Shanghai to New York fell 1% to $10,075 per FEU. According to Drewry’s Container Capacity Insight, six blank sailings have been announced for this week, unchanged from last week, indicating stable capacity. Strong U.S. import demand continues to support high rates. Drewry expects rates to remain less volatile this week.
On the Asia-Europe trade route, rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam increased 6% to $3,522 per FEU, and those from Shanghai to Genoa grew 7% to $3,945 per FEU.
