The Drewry World Container Index (WCI) increased 1% from the previous week to $4,339 per FEU in Week 33, driven by higher rates on the trans-Pacific trade route. The index, which continued to rise for two consecutive weeks, was higher by 85% year on year.
On the trans-Pacific trade route, spot rates increased again last week, with rates from Shanghai to New York rising 10% ($813) to $8,706 per FEU and from Shanghai to Los Angeles, 6% ($350) to $6,244 per FEU.
On the Asia–Europe trade route, spot rates declined last week, with rates from Shanghai to Genoa falling 8% ($426) to $5,080 per FEU from Shanghai to Rotterdam, 5% ($228) to $4,425 per FEU.
Meanwhile, some carriers have announced new FAK rates ranging from $6,700 to $7,100 per FEU on the Asia–Mediterranean trade route, effective Aug. 15, but weakening demand raises questions over the sustainability of these prices. Drewry expects rates to remain stable next week.
