The composite Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) stood at 3,205.97 points in Week 31, up 4.7% from the previous week, its first increase in four weeks, according to the Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE). Spot rates for container exports from Shanghai increased over 12% to North America. Growth was also registered to the Middle East and elsewhere.
On the east–west trades, spot rates for container exports from Shanghai were down $3,039 per TEU to Europe, down 3.7% to $4,189 per TEU to the Mediterranean but up 12.5% to $6,229 per FEU to the west coast of North America and up 12.6% to $9,054 per FEU to the east coast of North America.
On the north–south routes, ex-Shanghai rates were up 6.8% to $4,895 per TEU to the Middle East Gulf, up 5.1% to $5,730 per TEU to South America, and up 0.4% to $4,043 per TEU to East and West Africa but down 3.1% to $2,164 per TEU to Australia and New Zealand and down 0.5% to $2,785 per TEU to Southern Africa.
In the intra-Asia waters, container exports from Shanghai were carried at $173 per TEU to South Korea, up 5.5%; a $656 per TEU to Southeast Asia, up 2.8%; at $319 per TEU to Kansai, Japan, unchanged; and at $323 per TEU to Kanto, Japan, unchanged.
The SCFI represents spot rates for container exports from Shanghai that do not include terminal handling charges (THCs), which was set at a baseline of 1,000 points on Oct. 16, 2009.
