U.S. container imports from Japan amounted to 47,064 TEUs in May (based on volumes at ports of origin), down 11.3% year on year, Descartes Datamyne announced yesterday. Month on month, they plunged 24%. In the first five months (January–May), the U.S. imported a total of 256,705 TEUs from Japan, down 2.9% year on year.
In May, 27,767 TEUs were traded directly to the U.S. from Japan, down 19.1%, while the remaining 19,297 TEUs were transshipped on the way, up 3%, which accounted for 41% of the total, up by 5.7 percentage points from April. It was the first time since July 2023 that transshipment containers had exceeded 40%.
South Korea was responsible for 12,966 TEUs of transshipment containers, up 15.3% year on year; China, 3,757 TEUs, down 10.5%; Taiwan, 1,512 TEUs, down 33.2%; and Singapore, 498 TEUs, up 53.2%.
Looking at directly traded containers by origin, 8,709 TEUs were shipped from Tokyo, down 30.2%; 8,469 TEUs from Nagoya, down 15.6%; 5,674 TEUs from Kobe, down 22.8%; 3,540 TEUs from Yokohama, up 8.7%; and 436 TEUs from Osaka, up 25.3%.
