Outbound containers from Asia to Europe amounted to 1.84 million TEUs in April, up 12.3% year on year, according to statistics compiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) from data provided by the U.K.’s Container Trades Statistic (CTS). Marking a year-on-year improvement for the sixth consecutive month, they hit a record volume for the month in question. In the first four months (January–April), Asia exported 7.02 million TEUs to Europe, up 14.3%.
In April, 1.45 million TEUs were from China and Hong Kong in total, up 12.7%; 241,669 TEUs from Southeast Asia; up 20.8%; and 150,643 TEUs from other parts of Northeast Asia, down 1.9%.
By destination, 1.12 million TEUs were to North Europe, up 12.2%; 369,141 TEUs to the Eastern Mediterranean, up 10.7%; and 356,161 TEUs to the Western Mediterranean, up 14.5%.
Meanwhile, Asia’s imports from Europe came to 511,942 TEUs, up 3.4%, their first year-on-year expansion in five months.
By origin, 343,134 TEUs were from North Europe, up 3.6%; 85,203 TEUs from the Western Mediterranean, up 3.2%; and 83,605 TEUs from the Eastern Mediterranean, up 2.7%.
By destination, 242,856 TEUs were to China, down 1.4%; 159,837 TEUs to Southeast Asia, up 15.5%; and 109,234 TEUs to other parts of Northeast Asia, down 1.2%.
