U.S. container imports from 10 major countries and regions in Asia amounted to 1.75 million TEUs in May (based on volumes at ports of origin), up 17.5% year on year, according to statistics compiled by Descartes Datamyne from data provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). From the previous month, they grew 8.7%. In the first five months (January-May), they totaled 8.3 million TEUs, down 0.2% year on year. Overall container imports to the U.S. in May added up to 2.43 million TEUs, up 11.6% from a year earlier.

In May, U.S. container imports from China jumped 32.3% to 931,106 TEUs, marking their first year-on-year increase in 13 months. Those from Vietnam surged 17.4% to 258,135 TEUs, registering a year-on-year improvement for 32nd consecutive months. In contrast, containers from South Korea and India fell 9% to 187,193 TEUs and 3.4% to 75,807 TEUs, respectively. Those from Thailand soared 32% to 73,126 TEUs, enjoying a year-on-year rise for seven months running. Imports from Japan plunged 18.9% to 27,899 TEUs, coming at the bottom of the top 10.
