India's Chennai port has started to weigh the import container with effective March 1, 2013, in accordance with Chennai Customs instruction.
According to Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), any mismatch in the actual weight of container vs. manifest to Customs, can cause serious implication including:
a) Customs penalty (unknown at this point of time) but likely to be very high due to wrong weight declaration.
b) Port / terminal expenses towards shifting INR 965.25/20' plus 1447.88/40' + 12.36% service tax.
