South Korean ports are estimated to have handled a total of 1.702 million TEUs of containerized shipments in February 2013, increasing 3.3% year on year from 1.648 million TEUs, according to an announcement made on March 6 by the nation’s Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (MLTM).
In breakdown, exports and imports decreased 4.3% to 994,000 TEUs in total while transshipment (T/S) cargoes surged 20.4% to 687,000 TEUs thanks to growth in throughput at the Port of Busan. In contrast, coastal cargoes were sluggish, plunging 44.3% to 22,000 TEUs.
By port, Busan processed a total of 1.304 million TEUs, which registered an improvement of 5.2%. As described earlier, T/S cargoes, in particular, were robust, soaring 19.7% to 60,000 TEUs.
Total container throughput went down 7.3% to 162,000 at the Port of Kwangyang, but T/S cargoes were brisk, swelling 33.5% to 35,000 TEUs.
The Port of Inchon enjoyed an increase of 4.9%, processing 129,000 TEUs in total, due to increases in container movement to and from major trade partners, such as China, Vietnam and Thailand.
