The volume of containerized shipments exported from Japan to China in August 2012 was 1,075,529 tons, decreasing 5.1% from a year earlier, according to a recent report on container movement between Japan and China.

Suffering a year-on-year decline for two months in a row, the month in question’s outbound container traffic was weaker from a month earlier as well.

The Japan Maritime Center (JMC), which compiled the report from trade statistics unveiled by the Ministry of Finance (MOF), analyzed the fall in container throughput was attributed to the slowdown in the growth of the Chinese economy.

In the first eight months (January-August) of 2012, containers from Japan to China amounted to a total of 8,390,606 tons, going down 1.7% year on year.

In July, container freight rates were slightly lower than in May.

Meanwhile, imports of containers from China to Japan plunged 10.7% from a year earlier to 1,816,184 tons in August, said the JMC report, which added they went down 6.7% from a month earlier.

Over the period from January to August, however, they remained nearly unchanged, growing a minute 0.2% year on year to 15,199,044 tons.
