Ninety-three ports in Japan handled a total of 1.406 million TEUs of loaded and empty oceangoing containers in August 2012, decreasing 4.1% year on year, according to a report released on Oct. 19 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT).

Exports accounted for 694,000 TEUs, including 436,000 TEUs of loaded containers, and imports, 711,000 TEUs, of which 640,000 TEUs were loaded.

Focusing on the Big Five ports, Tokyo processed 320,000 TEUs, going down 5.3%; Yokohama, 219,000 TEUs, down 5.2%; Nagoya, 200,000 TEUs, down 1.3%; Osaka, 203,000 TEUs, down 0.4%; and Kobe, 170,000 TEUs, up 1.5%.

Their total came to 1.11 million TEUs, falling 4% from a month earlier and 2.7% from a year earlier.

The remaining 88 ports exported and imported 293,000 TEUs in total, which declined 4.1% from July and 5.6% from August 2011.
