Overall world container volume for August 2012 totaled 10,509,700 TEUs, a decline of nearly 5% on July and a 7% decline on a year ago, according to statistics released by London-based Container Trades Statistics (CTS).

CTS's figures show that exports from all prominent trading regions declined in August month on month. Those from the largest exporting region Asia declined by 0.8% on the previous month and a significant 8.3% year on year. Europe contracted by 9.3% month on month, although it registered marginal growth of 1.7% year on year. North America declined by a substantial 10.8% year on year and by 0.7% month on month.

On the import side, the largest importing region North America suffered a 3.8% decline month on month and a 4.3% decline year on year. Europe also witnessed a decline of 0.5% month on month and 7.8% year on year. Asia fell by 4.6% month on month and a significant 9.5% year on year, the figure of 1,717,700 TEUs in August being the lowest recorded since January 2011.
