The Port of Osaka processed a total of 43.14 million tons of shipments in the first half (January-June) of 2012, decreasing 1.3% year on year, according to a cargo throughput report released by the city of Osaka’s Port and Harbor Bureau.

International shipments accounted for 17.84 million tons, going down 2.2%, and domestic shipments, 25.3 million TEUs, down 0.6%.

Containers totaled 1,157,823 TEUs, declining 2.9%, of which 1,017,470 TEUs were moved to and from other countries, which fell 3.5%, and 140,353 TEUs to and from other ports in Japan, which grew 2.2%.

Looking at oceangoing cargoes, exports waned from a year earlier in January, February, March, April and June and amounted to a total of 4.411 million tons, diminishing 9.4%. On the other hand, imports rose 0.4% to 13.43 million tons.

Osaka exported 3.45 million tons of containerized shipments, contracting 10.9%, and imported 11.72 million tons, decreasing 3.9% for a total of 15.18 million tons, declining 5.6%. In terms of number, exports fell 2.1% to 449,247 TEUs, and imports, 4.6% to 565,574 TEUs. The total came to approximately 1.02 million TEUs, which were smaller by some 40,000 TEUs from a year earlier.

In 2011, annual container throughput was 2.17 million TEUs in total.
