Outbound container movement from Asia to Europe was sluggish in July 2012 due to a slowdown in the European economy, according to a report unveiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC).

Exports from Asia to Europe plunged 13.2% from a year earlier to 1,153,500 TEUs, suffering a year-on-year decline for five straight months. From a month earlier, however, they improved 2.8%.

Meanwhile, inbound shipments from Europe to Asia were steady, rising 3.9% from the corresponding month of 2011 and 1.9% from the previous month to total 546,500 TEUs.

In the first seven months, the JMC, which produced the report from statistical data provided by the U.K.’s Container Trades Statistics Ltd. (CTS), said that exports from Asia to Europe went down 3.9% year on year to 7,908,300 TEUs, but imports from Europe to Asia improved 6.6% to 3,742,200 TEUs.
