In July 2012, 93 ports in Japan handled a total of 1.465 million TEUs of containerized shipments, according to a report compiled by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT).

The total made a positive turn from the previous month, going up 2.1%, but at the same time, indicated that container lifting still remained sluggish across the nation, going down 0.5% from a year earlier.

The 93 ports, which are governed by the Port Transportation Business Act, exported 715,000 TEUs, including 458,000 TEUs of loaded containers, and imported 751,000 TEUs, of which 669,000 TEUs were loaded.

By port, throughput was stagnant at Tokyo and Yokohama, which processed 344,000 TEUs, declining 5.3%, and 246,000 TEUs, 2.5%.

On the other hand, results were favorable at Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe, to and from which 203,000 TEUs were moved, growing 5.3%; 205,000 TEUs, 6.7%; and 162,000 TEUs, 0.8%, respectively.
