In July 2012, a total of 11,008,200 TEUs of containerized shipments were traded worldwide, according to a report released on Sept. 12 by Container Trades Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K.
The total increased 3.7% from a month earlier but decreased 2.6% from a year earlier.
Exports from Asia, the world’s leading exporter, amounted to 3,887,800 TEUs, which grew 5.2% from the previous month but declined 5.3% from the corresponding month of 2011.
Imports to Asia totaled 1,782,500 TEUs, waning 7.8% from June 2012 and 6.39% from July 2011.
Europe exported 1,513,300 TEUs, improving 5.6% month on month and 7.8% year on year, and imported 1,770,100 TEUs, climbing 2% from a month earlier but falling nearly 9% from a year earlier.
Outbound shipments from North America (Canada, the U.S. and Mexico) diminished 3.5% from both the previous month and the corresponding month of the previous year to total 1,206,400 TEUs.
On the other hand, inbound containers to North America were favorable, hiking 6.5% month on month and 3% year on year.
As for other regions, containers from the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East totaled 567,600 TEUs, going down 6.78% from a year earlier, and those to the regions fell 2.16% to 1,037,000 TEUs in total.
Central and South America exported 424,900 TEUs, going down 8.35%, and imported 705,600 TEUs, down 4.22%.
