The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) which covers 13 U.S. East Coast and Gulf ports and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) which represents waterfront management have agreed to resume stalled contract negotiations upon the request of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS), which handles arbitration and mediation of labor disputes.

The parties have agreed to resume negotiations under FMCS's auspices during the week of September 17, 2012. Due to the sensitivity of this high profile dispute and consistent with the A FMCS's longstanding practice, either the location of the meeting or the content of the substantive negotiations will not be disclosed.
