In June 2012, a total of 1.306 million TEUs of containers were transported on the intra-Asia trade, increasing a notable 15.5% year on year from 1.13 million TEUs.

Exports from Japan improved 9.4% from 170,000 TEUs to 186,000 TEUs, while imports to Japan were much more brisk, surging 17% from 187,000 TEUs to 219,000 TEUs.

In the first half of 2012, 7.315 million TEUs were handed on the trade, which covers 12 Asian economies, registering a double-digit increase of 11.9% from 6.54 million TEUs.

Exports from Japan were favorable, going up 3.4% to 1.038 million TEUs, and imports to Japan were even more, swelling 6.3% to 1.256 million TEUs.

In June 2011, Japan’s exports and imports were both still under the adverse influence of the Great East Japan Earthquake, which devastated eastern Japan on March 11.

As such, the export and import figures in June 2012 cannot simply be compared to those scored a year earlier.
