China's General Administration of Customs has announced that the paperless clearance pilot project will be launched by on August 1, 2012 at the 12 customs districts. Under such a model, the original paper-based customs procedures from declaration making with customs authorities to release of goods will be replaced gradually by an electronic one. There will be no need for enterprises to print the attached documents as they can transmit electronic data of declaration directly to Customs, making the whole process of submitting information and customs examination and approval highly accessible.

12 customs where the pilot program will be introduced includes Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Nanjing, Ningbo, Hangzhou, Fuzhou, Qingdao, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Gongbei (Zhuhai) and Huangpu.

Full-fledged operation of paperless clearance is scheduled for 2015.
