It is projected that imports and exports of containerized shipments to and from nine major ports in Japan will increase 3.2% year on year to 12,865,000 TEUs in total in fiscal 2012 (April 2012-March 2013), according to Nittsu Research Institute and Consulting Inc. (NRIC).

In breakdown, imports will grow 3.2% to 7,563,000 TEUs, positively impacted by steady consumer spending and a stronger Japanese yen. Increases will be marked for consumer goods and machinery/equipment.

Meanwhile, exports will rose 3.3% to 5,300,000 TEUs. They will improve remarkably for the first few months of the fiscal year, rebounding from the significant fall that they suffered in the previous fiscal year. But in and after the July-September quarter, they will lose momentum.

NRIC, which on June 15 released a revision of its economic and cargo transport forecasts for fiscal 2012, anticipates that imports of air cargoes will increase a minute 1.3% from a year earlier to 1,241,000 tons. On the other hand, exports are estimated to decline 0.6% to 1,034,000 tons for a total of 2,275,300 tons, going up 0.4%.
