The overall volume of containerized shipments handled in February 2012 by major shipping companies on the intra-Asia trade (among 12 Asian economies) amounted to 1,111,195 TEUs.
The throughput surged a notable 14.9% from the 972,244 TEUs handled a year earlier and a much milder 3.4% from a month earlier.
The Lunar New Year fell on Jan. 23 this year, which was on Feb. 3 in 2011. An increase in freight movement after the Lunar New Year holidays led to a growth of 22% in containers to and from China, which contributed to the rise in the overall container traffic on the intra-Asia trade.
Exports from Japan to the 11 other nations went down 11.3% year on year to 170,000 TEUs due partly to the appreciation of the yen, suffering negative growth for four months in a row, or from November 2011.
On the other hand, imports to Japan were favorable, swelling 8.2% to 187,866 TEUs, which was a major improvement from the previous month, when they only grew slightly.
In the first two months of 2012, the total volume climbed 9.7% from a year earlier to 2,185,719 TEUs. Exports from Japan declined 7.6% to 310,293 TEUs, but those to Japan picked up 3.9% to 383,331 TEUs.
