Westbound containers from Asia to Europe decreased in January 2012. Due to the lunar New Year holidays in Asia, they went down 6.58% year on year from 3,708,500 TEUs to 3,480,400 TEUs, according to a report compiled by Container Trades Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K.

On the other hand, eastbound shipments from Europe to Asia were brisk, improving 6.73% from 1,526,400 TEUs to 1,629,100 TEUs.

The freight rate index?the average in 2008=100 points?was approximately 88 points on a global scale, improving from the 85 points in December 2011.

In 2011, 13,927,000 TEUs of containers were moved from Asia to Europe, growing 3.3% from a year earlier. Container movement was more robust from Europe to Asia, rising 7.48% to 6,052,500 TEUs.
