Container movement on the intra-Asia trade grew favorably in November 2011. The combined volume of containerized shipments that major shipping companies carried among 12 Asian countries and regions was 1.157 million TEUs, improving 7.5% from a year earlier. Exports from Japan to the other 11 economies went down 4.6% to 160,000 TEUs, declining year on year after enjoying growth for two months in a row. On the other hand, imports to Japan were steady, increasing 4% to 211,100 TEUs.

Containers from Japan to Thailand plunged 26.3% to 17,000 TEUs under the influence of the devastating floods that hit the Southeast Asian nation from July. Those from Thailand to Japan were also sluggish, falling 14.9% to 21,000 TEUs.

From January to November 2011, a total of 12.467 million TEUs were moved on the trade, rising 8% from the corresponding 11 months of 2010, when 11.537 million TEUs were transported. Exports from Japan decreased 5.4% to 1.979 million TEUs, impacted by the negative growth they suffered in the first half. In contrast, imports to Japan were brisk, climbing 6.6% to 2.256 million TEUs.
