In November 2011, 1,043,400 TEUs of containers were transported westbound from Asia to Europe, according to a report on container movement to and from Europe.

Container Trades Statistics, Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K., which compiled the report, said the monthly throughput was down 5.33% from a year earlier, when 1,102,200 TEUs were moved, suffering the first year-on-year decline in nine months since February.

On the other hand, container traffic was favorable in the eastbound direction from Europe to Asia, totaling 511,200 TEUs, increasing 7.42 percent from 475,900 TEUs.

From January to November, a total of 12,720,900 TEUs were carried from Asia to Europe, improving 3.3% from the 12,317,400 TEUs that were handled in the corresponding 11 months of 2010.

Shipments from Europe to Asia were more robust, rising 7.5% from 5,149,700 TEUs to 5,538,000 TEUs.

In November, the index for freight rates for westbound services (the average rates in 2008=100 points) fall four points from October to 69 points, falling below 70 points for the first time in 27 months, or August 2009, when the index was 64 points.
