Westbound containers from Asia to Europe totaled 1,110,900 TEUs in October 2011, increasing 3.86% from the 1,072,000 TEUs moved on the trade a year earlier, according to a report compiled by Container Trades Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K.

On a month-to-month basis, however, the total went down 4.6% from the 1,112,500 TEUs handled in September, having declined since it peaked at 1,300,500 TEUs in July.

Meanwhile, eastbound containers from Europe to Asia amounted to 541,200 TEUs in October, swelling 14.3% from the 475,900 TEUs transported in the corresponding month of 2010.

They were robust on a month-to-month basis as well, having enjoyed double-digit year-on-year growth for three months in a row, or since August.

On a cumulative scale, container trade was brisk on both directions in the first 10 months.

From Asia to Europe, 11,684,100 TEUs were carried, rising 4.5% from the 11,178,700 TEUs handled a year earlier, and from Europe to Asia, 5,028,400 TEUs, increasing 7.6% from 4,673,800 TEUs.

In October, the freight rate index (the average in 2008: 100 points) was 73 points for westbound services, going down three points from September.

The index leveled off from a month earlier in September but began to decrease again.
