South Korea and China agreed to increase the number of gateway ports for their mutual traffic of trailers from the current five to nine at their second meeting of the Intermodal Freight Cars Transport Cooperation Committee held in Beijing.

The two contiguous nations concluded an agreement on mutual traffic of sea-land intermodal freight cars in July 2010 which took effect on November 24 the same year. The pact allows fast and seamless container transportation between the two countries since containers will be loaded on trailers and carried by car ferries, and thus there will be no loading and unloading processes at the gateway ports. South Korea's Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs says that it reduces transport cost by 49.5$ per TEU and time by 3.5 hours and makes the transportation of emergency cargo and hazardous materials more effective and less harmful.

The recent agreement has added Gunsan as gateway port on the Korean side on top of the current Incheon and Pyeongtaek, and Yantai, Longkou and Shidao on top of the current Qingdao, Weihai and Rizhao on the Chinese side.
