The number of Japan International Freight Forwarders Association Inc. (JIFFA) regular members reached 400 when welcoming two new companies on Aug. 1, 2011.

The organization of international freight forwarders was established in October 1981.

When the Shipping Act of 1984 was enacted in the U.S., common carriers that did not have vessels were defined as non-vessel-operating common carriers (NVOCCs).

In Japan, a legal infrastructure has been established for forwarding services.

Thanks to these legislative improvements, a growing number of business operators are entering the forwarding service market in Japan.

As such, the number of JIFFA members is increasing steadily, reaching 200 in March 1994, nearly 13 years from the inauguration of the association; 300 in October 2003, nine years later; and 400 earlier this month, eight years later.

In 2010, JIFFA will celebrate its 30th anniversary.
