Effective May 1, 2011 German Customs requires the declaration of security data elements for cargo originating in Switzerland and to be loaded onto a vessel which will leave the territory of the European Union, Hapag-Lloyd said on its Website.

Normally, Swiss origin cargo railed to Hamburg or Bremerhaven is arriving without this declaration. In this case the carrier is responsible for filing an EXS with Customs.

''In order to ensure that the EXS transmission to Customs will be done - also in case of merchant's haulage - we need to know at time of booking, whether origin of goods is Switzerland or Goods are transported from Switzerland by rail/combined rail to Hamburg or Bremerhaven, the German line said.

''You will understand that in order to safeguard a smooth process we require your shipping instructions at least 72 hours prior to arrival of the mainline vessel (excluding Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays), Hapag-Lloyd added.
