In the first quarter (January to March) of 2011, major shipping companies transported a total of 3,174,000 TEUs of containers on the intra-Asia trade (among 12 Asian economies), which represented a growth of 5.7% from the 3,004,000 TEUs handled a year earlier.

Exports from Japan to the 11 other Asian countries and regions accounted for 515,000 TEUs, which represented a year-on-year decrease of 5%, but imports increased 7% to 590,000 TEUs.

In March alone, 1,181,000 TEUs were moved on the intra-Asia trade, an increase of 7.8% from the corresponding month of 2010.

Exports from Japan, which suffered a devastating earthquake during the month in question, fell 9.5% to 179,000 TEU, but imports managed to achieve positive growth, rising 9% to 221,000 TEUs, though they shrank quantitatively.
