Westbound containers from Asia to Europe decreased a notable 11.9% year on year to 830,600 TEUs in February 2011 due to China’s Lunar New Year (Chinese New Year) holidays, according to a report on container movement on trades to and from Europe.

The report, which was compiled by Container Trade Statistics Ltd. of the U.K., added that, on the other hand, eastbound shipments from Europe to Asia increased 1.57% to 459,500 TEUs.

The freight rate index, which was an average of 100 points in 2008, was 95 points in February, falling below the 2008 level for the third consecutive month, or since December 2010.
