Westbound containers from Asia to Europe increased 17.67% from a year earlier to 1,303,500 TEUs in January 2011, according to Container Trade Statistics, Ltd.

Behind the double-digit improvement, there were last-minute shipments from China as Chinese New Year fell on Feb. 3 this year, said the U.K. company.

Eastbound shipments from Europe to Asia were also favorable, rising 6.19% to 442,900 TEUs.

However, the freight rate index for the westbound trade (the average of 2008 rates: 100 points) was 96 points, meaning it failed to reach its 2008 level for the second consecutive month.
