An agreement was reached earlier this month by Japan, China and South Korea to cooperate in developing a network for logistics information services in northeast Asia (NEAL-NET).

On Dec. 2, 2010, delegations from the three northeast Asian nations met in Hangzhou, China for a forum for discussing improvements in logistics activities.

When the logistics ministers of Japan, China and South Korea met in May for their third meeting, they agreed to enhance their cooperation and partnership in the field of logistics in northeast Asia.

The May agreement has led to the recent forum, which was attended by more than 300 individuals, including government officials; researchers and other experts; and representatives of the logistics industry.

Under the MoU, Japan, China and South Korea will link their systems ? COLINS, LOGINK and SP-IDC, respectively ? to share information on ship arrivals and departures at port as well as container shipments between ports.

They will also be encouraged to standardize information on logistics, do technical research, exchange technologies, promote education and organize a common logistics information system.

The countries also agreed to establish an organization of senior officials.

The organization will be made up of a joint steering committee, which will be responsible for deciding on basic policies for cooperation among Japan, China and South Korea on logistics information; a council, which will be in charge of discussing activities and plans for the organization; and a secretariat, which will be engaged in carrying out actual operations.
