Nittsu Research Institute and Consulting Inc. (NRIC) has revised its economic and cargo transport projections for fiscal 2010 (from April 2010 to March 2011).

In respect to international cargo transport, NRIC now anticipates the combined volume of loaded containers imported to and exported from Japan by sea will come near to marking a double-digit increase.

They will go up 9.9% from a year earlier to slightly over 12.17 million TEUs, according to NRIC.

In breakdown, the growth in exports from Japan ? mainly those to other Asian economies ? weakened in summer, and the rebound from the plunge in the aftermath of the collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in September 2008 is projected to lose momentum during the first half.

As such, exports will rise more mildly in the second half, but thanks to the expansion of the global economy, they will still remain robust.

NRIC estimates they will improve 11.3% to 5.402 million TEUs.

NRIC projects that imports to Japan will manage to register a double-digit increase in the first half but grow more slowly in the second half, going up 8.9% to 6.77 million TEUs.

NRIC foresees that international airfreight to and from Japan will also achieve a double-digit improvement year on year in fiscal 2010, soaring 14.6% to 2.36 million tons in total.

Exports from Japan will remain massive thanks to briskness in information technology-related and other commodities, surging 16.6% to 1.154 million tons.

Imports to Japan will also favorable, climbing 12.8% to 1.207 million tons.
