Danish-owned bulk carrier Nordic Barents will be the first non-Russian flagged vessel to sail through the Northern Sea Route. The vessel will sail from Kirkenes at the beginning of September with a cargo of iron, bound for China. The voyage will take 25 days and the vessel is expected to save USD 180.000 in fuel costs and will take around half the time needed for a similar voyage through the Suez Canal.
The Nordic Barents, ice-class 1A, is owned by Danskib 80 and managed by ID Shipping (Investeringsgruppen Danmark) and commercially managed by Nordic Bulk Carriers. The 43,450 DWT ship was built in 1995 and flies the Hong Kong flag.
Two Russian icebreakers operated by Rosatomflot will escort the ship.
