Nittsu Research Institute and Consulting, Inc. (NRIC) recently has unveiled its projection for cargo transport in fiscal 2010 (April 2010-March 2011).

As for international cargoes, the Tokyo-based think tank of the Nippon Express Co. Ltd. (Nittsu) group anticipates that containerized oceangoing shipments to and from Japan will regain their peak levels in both directions.

In terms of volume, they will total 6.227 million TEUs in the first half, up 17.1% from a year earlier, and 6.196 million TEUs in the second half, up 7.6%, for an annual total of 12.423 million TEUs, up 12.1%.

Meanwhile, international airfreight to and from Japan is projected to amount to 1.1838 million tons in the first half, up 25.5% year on year, and 1.1859 million tons in the second half, up 6.2%, for a total of 2.3697 million tons, up 15.1%.

Although they will increase from the previous fiscal year, they will not be powerful enough to return to what they were in fiscal 2007, or prior to the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc, according to NRIC.
