Oceangoing container volume handled at Japan’s 64 ports totaled 14.76 million TEUs in fiscal year 2009 ended on March 31, 2010, down 14% from the previous year, according to statistics released by the Institute for Advanced Port Transportation of Japan.
Loaded export containers tumbled 16.9% in FY2009 to 5.02 million TEUs while loaded import boxes fell 11.4% to 6.77 million TEUs. Empty containers also showed negative growth as exports slipped 6.7% on year to 2.33 million TEUs and imports plunged 35.5% to 632,285 TEUs in FY 2009.
