Container shipments between Japan and China in May increased slightly by 0.9% over the same period in 2009, to 223,807 TEUs, according to the Shipping Conference and General Administration (SCAGA).

In May, exports from Japan to China fell 2.6% from a year before to 78,394 TEUs, the first decline in the past three months, while imports from China to Japan rose 2.9% on year to 145,413 TEUs, achieving the fourth consecutive month of increase. The decline in exports is mainly attributable to the slowdown of Shanghai-bound shipments which suffered a 15.8% drop to 40,641 TEUs in May.

For the first five months of the year, box traffic between Japan and China climbed 9.1% from a year earlier to 1,173,280 TEUs.
