Container volumes between ten Asian countries and territories (Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia) totaled 1.125 million TEUs in May, representing a 15.2% increase over the same month in 2009.

Exports from Japan to the Asian nations and territories swelled 8.9% from a year earlier to 188,000 TEUs while Japan's containerized imports marked a double-digit increase of 13.5 % to 207,000 TEUs.

For the first five months of the year, intra-Asia box traffic achieved a strong 17.8% increase from the same period last year to 5.264 million TEUs compared with 4.470 million TEUs in 2009. Japan's exports for the period surged 18.4% year on year to 979,000 TEUs and its imports increased 11.1% on year to 1.18 million TEUs.
