South Korea's Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said ocean cargo throughput in the country will top the 1 billion mark by 2020.

According to the prediction, South Korea's combined cargo volume will amount to 1.27 billion tons in ten years, up 73% compared 730 million tons handled at the nation's ports in 2009. Busan will enjoy the status as the nation's busiest port handling 370 million tons by 2020 as compared with 110 million tons in 2009, followed by Kwangyang whose throughput is expected to hit 210 million tons as compared with 100 million tons last year. Pyeongtaek Port will see a drastic increase in volume, from 30 million tons in 2009 to 110 million tons in 2020.

The nation's container throughput is predicted to reach 36 million TEUs in 2020 as compared with 16.3 million TEUs in 2009. Box traffic at Busan will rise to 21 million TEUs in ten years from the previous year's 12 million TEUs, while Gwangyang's volume is expected to reach 6.5 million TEUs.
