Effective July 29, 2010, new imported automobiles with less than 16 seats will be allowed into Vietnam only via five designated international ports, according to a new regulation issued by the Ministries of Industry and Trade and Transportation.

The five ports include Cai Lan in Quang Ninh Province and Hai Phong Port in Hai Phong City in the north; Da Nang Port in Central Vietnam; Ho Chi Minh Port in Ho Chi Minh City and Ba Ria-Vung Tau Port in the south. Customs declarations must be processed at these ports.

The measure aims to control automobile imports, which is blamed in part for Vietnam's trade deficit.
